The Vegetable Orchestra
ONIONOISE

tres 008

ONIONOISE is the third CD by The Vegetable Orchestra, an ensemble unique to the world of music which is committed to the exploration of the acoustic qualities of vegetables.

In addition to performing on the international concert circuit, the 12-people collective from Vienna has spent the last dozen years experimenting with the building of vegetable instruments, industriously unearthing the acoustic universe of roots and legumes, cabbages and courgettes.

All the instruments used are exclusively made from vegetables: from fresh as well as dried plant material such as carrot, leek, celery root, artichoke, dried pumpkin and onion skin. All these components are used for building organic instruments and sound generators which usually only last for one concert or one day in the studio. In addition to the vegetables, various utensils like record players or power drills are used to create unusual noises and to add unexpected texture to the music.

sehen mit ohren / seeing with ears

tres 006

"Sehen mit Ohren / Seeing with Ears" is a composition exploring the acoustic perception of architecture. Six blind people living in Vienna discuss their perception of the city, space & architecture. Additional sound materials are various soundscapes of Viennese architecture. Through the techniques of montage, overlay and alienation new acoustic spaces emerge while beginning to warp into dreamlike spaces.

In german language.

The physical release comes as digipak with braille on the front and the audio CD and includes a 24 page booklet with the complete interviews.

hearings

tres 001

what do coffee machines, neon tubes and gameboys have in common? they can all be found as the creators of sound on the cd hearings. everyday objects as instruments and unconventional approaches as a principle: this premiere cd from transacoustic research’s newly founded label offers, along with the reinterpretation of language samples into musical material, also the sound of the jew’s harp as the basis for electronic music, homemade laptops, and sounds from hard drives’ writing heads.

The Vegetable Orchestra
automate

tres 002
the first vienna vegetable orchestra plays music exclusively on vegetable instruments: carrots and cucumbers instead of guitars and drums. or, with their new cd automate, a cuke-o-phon and radish-marimba instead of laptop and sampler. the music presents a transfer of electronic music pieces and structures to the instruments of the vegetable garden.

automate presents the vegetable orchestra’s second cd and their logical further development. the work on the organic sound bodies and refinement of the playing and recording techniques have made audible a new vegetable sound universe. Along with cover versions of Kraftwerk, the cd is a compilation of tracks influenced by the most diverse contemporary electronic music styles. an amazing affinity of the organic and digital world becomes clear on the one hand whereas on the other, an unmistakably unique veggie sound is created, which could not have been created with any other group of instruments.

gummihandschuhdudelsack / rubberglovebagpipes

tres 005

Rubberglovebagpipes is the name of an instrument and at the same time the titel of the first Sergej Mohntau Live-Performance, developed between 1999 and 2002. Musical instruments are used as utensils and objects of utility as musical instruments. Besides the Rubberglovebagpipes other instruments like the Electric Window, the Jack-Of-All-Trades Double Bass and Selfmade Hardcase-Laptops have been created. In combination with human voices and electronic devices various pieces have been generated. The compositions follow the specific sonic features of the adapted utensils and lead to different musical styles. A common sound generated from both analog and digital sources encased in a dramaturgical concept based on mechanics, electricity, and electronics.
Music as the language of objects.

vokal

tres 003
vokál consists exclusively of spoken samples. no other material and no other instruments were used. every bass drum and every synthesizer seeming sound was once a word, a sentence, or an utterance. sixty minutes of pure language that doesn’t sound like language.

vokál is both electronic music and digital micro-cut-up-text, ranging from a complete rejection of linguistic sounds to somewhat understandable babble. at one point, entire words or even sentences are audible, then only short, individual fragments emerge on the click and cut carpet, to once again disappear and make room for something new.

institute for transacoustic research
outpost

tres 004

founded in 1998 the institute for transacosutic research concentrates on the invention and definition of the term “transacoustics”, which researches the theory that by permanently changing the auditory angle and continually reinterpretating conventional manners of hearing, the borders of the acoustic and the audible can be expanded beyond the threshold of perception.

in the magnetic probability fields of micro- and macro-sounds resides the last outpost of an observable reality. from this starting point the projection and distillation of an imaginary region, a conceivable vastness with digital and analogue sound processors, was attempted in several test arrangements.
